Spiralling rents

Sir, – The recent report on rent increases on daft.ie prompts a recollection of one of the stand-out moments in the first of the two Prime Time specials on RTÉ recently. Two graphs followed each other in quick succession: the first comparing the rising prices of houses in the EU and Ireland, showing a degree of proximity between the two. The second, however, compared the rising cost of rents in the two areas.

The line for Irish rentals stayed close to that for the EU to begin with but then headed rapidly upward toward the stratosphere.

I know little about economics, but the discrepancy between the two sets of graphs surely reveals a remarkable lack of logical consistency. Perhaps one of our Irish economists could offer an explanation. It seems unlikely that our present Government would be up to such a task. – Yours, etc,

BRIAN COSGROVE,
