Social housing and public policy

Sir, – I think the new Government policy on social housing is very reasonable, don’t you? People who want social housing should be prepared to take what they are offered. If they need to bring their children several miles to school, then go to their “gig economy” jobs and rely on family support who are near their original home, well, sure, can’t they just drive there?

Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy claimed recently that political ideology had nothing to do with his social housing policy. However, this blatant attempt to reduce the lists, without solving the problem, is, to say the least, disappointing.

When people need social housing, they also need support networks – if those networks are not available where the social housing is offered, then it cannot be unreasonable for those entitled to it to refuse the offer as often as necessary. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Perhaps a Government should also be there for the people who get up early in the morning because the rain has seeped into their tent overnight. – Yours, etc,

Sir – Further to “Priced out of Dublin? Why not try Greystones?” (September 9th), the phrase “Let them eat cake” springs to mind. According to Daft.ie, currently the cheapest three-bedroom house in Greystones, Co Wicklow, is priced at €375,000. – Yours, etc,
