Sir, – For the sake of those who suffered dreadful abuse at the hands of some of its members, and for those whose suffering has been compounded and continues due to what has been described as the morally indefensible strategy of the Christian Brothers organisation’s refusal to make the single member nomination for civil legal cases, I urge it to demonstrate some genuine remorse, compassion and basic human decency, and to do so now.
As well as, most importantly, removing a considerable obstruction from the pathway to some form of justice for victims and survivors, it would also have the effect of reducing the cold shadow that continues to unfairly hang over the current CBS and Edmund Rice school communities.
By doing so now in relation to its engagement with former students, the Christian Brothers could demonstrate to our current students that it is never too late to show some humility and contrition, and to do the right and righteous thing. – Yours, etc,
