FAI and corporate governance

Sir, – Many Irish football fans felt irate at the amount of money the FAI was paying John Delaney to be the CEO.

They may feel relieved that he’s no longer in that position, but they might feel equally irate at the amount of money the FAI is paying him to not be the CEO. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Perceived gaps in the governance of the FAI led it to commission a review of its organisational structures by Jonathan Hall, who has vast experience in that area.

That report was reportedly adopted by the board of the FAI last Friday.

On Saturday it was announced that John Delaney was stepping down as CEO but simultaneously taking up the newly created role of executive vice-president.

If the FAI were to embrace a new era of organisational best practice, surely this position should have been filled by open competition?

I have no doubt that Mr Delaney, given his extensive knowledge of Irish football, would have been a leading contender for the job.

To have filled the role with such haste and without recourse to other candidates devalues the review recently conducted. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I was only surprised by one thing in Emmet Malone’s article about John Delaney’s rent being paid by the FAI and that is that the FAI managed to find a luxury detatched property in Wicklow during a housing crisis for such exceptional value. €3,000 per month is surely a steal! – Yours, etc,
