Ursula von der Leyen and vaccines

Sir, – While understanding Ursula von der Leyen’s frustration (which I share) at the failure of one third of the European Union’s population to get vaccinated, valid consent to medical interventions, including vaccination, is a human right recognised in Irish and international law.

We cannot and should not mandate vaccines for the 7 per cent of adults in Ireland who remain unvaccinated.

We can only be grateful to the 93 per cent of adults in Ireland who despite the newness of these vaccines were brave enough to get jabbed. That they have protected themselves and others is now evidenced by hospital ICU admissions where 54 per cent of admissions are unvaccinated .
