Sir , – As a life-long SDLP voter in the North, I take exception to David Frost , UK Brexit minister, and Brandon Lewis, UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (Opinion, July 2nd) raising the possibility of unrest in the North over a protocol agreed by the government of which they are key contributors.
These comments are an insult to all of us who, despite living through many years of discrimination, have done our best to promote stability in our communities.
Shame on them for such pathetic sabre rattling in their attempts to renege from their international legal obligations. Have they no shame.

Sir, – David Frost and Brandon Lewis, argue that there should be a new balance in the way the Northern Ireland Protocol is operated (Opinion, July 3rd). That is not unreasonable. But the final paragraph warns that the UK might adopt a unilateral approach: “We look to find solutions. If that is not possible, we will of course have to consider all our options, because we have an overriding responsibility and obligation to support peace, prosperity and stability in Northern Ireland”.
This is not a particularly helpful contribution by the UK at this stage where both parties – the EU and the UK – should be working closely together to ensure that the Northern Ireland protocol does work efficiently.

A chara, – Reading the article by David Frost and Brandon Lewis as they attempt to disengage from their role in the creation of the Northern Ireland protocol, the old dictum returned to me: Never let the truth get in the way of a good Tory.
