Sir, – I do not believe that Minister for Transport Shane Shane Ross is a fool. Why is the Government going to great lengths to make him look like one? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – This “new politics” seems awfully familiar. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Could I venture that Leo Varadkar is more intent on perpetuating a republic of opportunism than in creating a republic of opportunity? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I note that see Fianna Fáil’s spokesman on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Niall Collins has described the nomination of Attorney General Máire Whelan to a senior judicial position as being “a cynical political decision” and an example of “stroke politics” (News, June 16th).

The utter hypocrisy of this statement is breath-taking bearing in mind Fianna Fáil’s culture of cynicism and hypocrisy over the years both in government and opposition.

There are countless examples but one that springs to mind is their chameleon-like position in the water charges debacle where, having actually sponsored their introduction as part of the programme for government, retreated to the populist enclave of outright opposition to any charges.

Stroke politics? They wrote the book! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I see no mention of the number of Leaving Cert points that applicants need to be considered for any position on the Court of Appeal. Is that the point, or am I missing the points? – Yours, etc,
