Deaths in the channel: names matter

Sir, – Names matter. To call the drowned 31 men, women and children in the English Channel migrants is to deny their story.

They are not migrants. They are victims. They are refugees. They are escapees who succumbed to the frozen waters in winter. We need to tell their story correctly and not pander to our comfortable sensibilities by saying they are migrants.

Will we learn their names. I think not. Names matter.
