Sir, – Your correspondent (Letters, November 24th) concedes the obvious: despite existing legislation and a thorough regime of inspections, Irish authorities cannot ensure the welfare of Irish-reared livestock subsequently to their export.
His final point is not a credible one; neither Irish authorities nor Irish activists can hope to change consumer and retailer behaviour in the numerous polities to which our livestock are exported. The place to make the change is right here, in Dáil Éireann.
The very least that we can do for these docile, sentient beings is to ensure that when they finally cross the water, their suffering and stress is at an end.
– Yours, etc.
