Voting age and referendums

Sir, – On principle I would not be in favour of giving 16-year-old citizens a referendum vote. Under the Child Care Act 1991, apart from apprenticeship contracts, anyone under 18 who is not and has never been married cannot enter a legal contract. So the proposal is that people who are not considered mature enough to enter a legal contract should be considered mature enough to vote in a referendum? – Yours, etc,

BRENDAN CASSERLY,
