Violence in Venezuela

Sir, – Whatever the rights and wrongs of the situation in Venezuela, street violence aimed at overthrowing a democratically elected leader is not justified (Tom Hennigan, World News, August 2nd).

The opposition has bombed soldiers in the street, launched a grenade attack from a helicopter on the supreme court and launched an armed attack on a hospital.

They have virtually called for a military coup, which nearly happened several years ago and has happened in Chile and other South American countries with terrible consequences.

The collusion of Western governments, by their silence and more active means, is an outrage. – Yours, etc,
