Time to reconsider energy options

Sir, – Dr Simon Sweeney (July 5th) describes as remarkable the progress Germany has made with renewables. What he fails to mention are Germany’s remarkably high energy prices by European standards, second only to Denmark’s, and a direct result of their renewables-only stance, hardly something to aspire to if increased electrification of transport is to be encouraged.

Perhaps Ireland should seek to emulate France’s extensive use of nuclear, and subsequent low energy costs, or at the very least amend Ireland’s current blanket ban on nuclear energy to allow for passively safe, waste-eliminating designs such as molten salt fast reactors, should they become commercially available. – Yours, etc,

NICK BUCKNELL,
