Sir, – Recent reports about civil servants wanting additional days from a previously agreed day and a half for divorce proceedings has raised eyebrows ("Civil servants seek increased 'divorce leave'", News, April 11th). Given that this previously unknown benefit is not available in the private sector, should it be taxed as a benefit in kind? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I note that the civil servants and teachers want additional time off to deal with marital breakdown. My understanding of the way human nature works is that if you increase the incentive, you will increase the response. Are we sure we want to increase marital breakdown? – Yours, etc,
