Sir, – Fintan O'Toole describes the meaning of the phrase "Sinn Féin" as "Ourselves Alone" ("Are the English ready for self-government?", Opinion & Analysis, March 19th).
The literal translation of “Sinn Féin” is “Ourselves” or “We Ourselves”.
A more accurate translation of “Ourselves Alone” would be “Sinn Féin Amháin”, an old slogan of the Gaelic League. – Yours, etc,
