Northerly direction

Sir, – My heart aches for Tony McGovern (Letters, March 18th), who brings his son to play cricket in the North, only to find it “slightly intimidating and disconcerting to drive through so many bleak villages and towns with Union Jacks on every pole and house, by the hundred. How can we be expected to consider a holiday up there?”

Indeed.

But has Mr McGovern considered how much more intimidating and disconcerting it is for half the population who live here? – Yours, etc,

JUDE
