Sir, – Due credit to Francesca Walsh, of Bray, winner of last week's illustrious New Yorker cartoon caption competition. Cracking the code of this weekly contest, which calls on readers to craft their own punchline to accompany black-and-white drawings, is extremely difficult. The Kaamran Hafeez cartoon showed a group of friends admiring a unicorn's head mounted on a wall. The caption was: "Well, of course they don't exist. Now."

Francesca is the first Irish winner in over four decades. Her late father, Dick Walsh, who was for many years political editor of The Irish Times, would have been proud. – Yours, etc,

JOHN O’BYRNE,
