Northern Ireland and language issue

Sir, – Further to "Next stop, an electronic solution to language issue" (Newton Emerson, Opinion & Analysis, September 20th), that Belfast buses use satellite tracking and electronic displays to show their destination in either English or Irish depending on the assumed nationalist/unionist allegiance of the locality proves that the spirit of the Strabane-born satirist, and Irish Times columnist, Myles na Gopaleen, lives on. – Yours, etc,

Dr JOHN DOHERTY,

Vienna.

Sir, – Happily the Anglicised spelling of Irish place-names is acceptable to those who are otherwise averse to the language itself. This avoids the need to render Shankill Road as Old Church Road and so on, although it would be worth the journey just to see the destination of Tandragee displayed as Béarla. – Yours, etc,
