Sir, – News that Revenue is clamping down on income received by Airbnb hosts is welcome, as society no longer condones tax evasion ("Revenue targets 12,000 Airbnb hosts in tax clampdown", September 19th). However, bearing in mind that we are trying to increase the number of tourists coming into the country, and that there aren't enough hotel beds in key locations at peak season, it doesn't make sense to tax Airbnb landlords at their marginal tax rate, as it removes the incentive to host guests.
Perhaps a new lower tax rate for Airbnb profits would satisfy the needs of Revenue, while encouraging homeowners to host tourists. – Yours, etc,
