It’s not always about the 800 years

Sir, – In reference to Jennifer O'Connell's column "Watching the Brits self-destruct is high-risk fun", (Opinion, July 24th).

Could it be that a simmering resentment of the English (or is it the British, one seems unsure?) has more to do with our neighbour threatening the 23-plus year peace of the Good Friday Agreement; of it having turned its back on the European project we joined together in 1973 that had been the central pillar of our mutual economic and social policies and prosperity for the half-century since and that prolongs the peace of the 450 million after centuries of almost continuous continental struggle and strife, and less to do with 800 years of a shared history? – Yours, etc,
