Farming carbon emissions

Sir, – Barry Roche's article ("This broad brush of culling the national herd is just too easy", October 30th) highlights some of the things farmers can do to reduce their carbon footprint. A farmer is quoted as saying his carbon footprint has been cut from 1.25 to 1.09 per kg of milk, a reduction of 13 per cent over the last six years.

However his herd size has increased by 60 per cent, from 100 to 160. By my calculation it would seem his overall carbon footprint has actually increased by 40 per cent, assuming the same milk yield per cow. Where’s the carbon saving?

– Yours, etc
