Eyre Square no-go area

Sir, – I was in Brisbane, Australia 25 years ago and the city centre was busier at midnight than at noon without a hint of trouble. Right in the city centre was a large portacabin with the single word “police” emblazoned on the side.

Each night the local police would decamp from the station house and set up in the city centre. No big deal but a huge effect in terms of policing.

Most local Galwegians avoid Eyre Square at night and have done so for years. Mill Street Garda station to Eyre Square is a 10-minute stroll or three minutes if you’re being chased by some thug.

The solution is cheap, effective and instant. No Dáil committee needed.
