Sir, – The Doctors For Universal Healthcare coalition make their case with an optimism that is not shared by all their colleagues (Letters, December 8th).
Many others are dubbing the plans “Slán-to-Care”, expecting contract changes will lead to an exodus of hospital specialists to the private sector and overseas.
Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has made it clear that private healthcare will continue to exist, including to help manage public waiting lists.
All doctors desire radical improvements in the health service, but restricting the working practices of new-entrant consultants outside their public commitments seems the wrong place to focus initial efforts.
