A chara, – You report that a planning application has been lodged for the construction of a massive data centre in Ennis ("Plans to be lodged for ¤1.2 billion Ennis data centre", News, July 16th). The centre is expected to draw down 200 megawatts of power. This increased power demand will make it much harder for us to meet our climate goals. The fact that the application includes 18 gas generators to power the facility is telling. It also points to the solution. Any proposed data centre must include its own power supply, and that power must be from renewable sources – wind or solar.
