Sir, – I received, to my dismay, an email from An Post this afternoon relating to their Addresspal service, stating that my card is no longer valid in Kilmacanogue post office as it had “temporarily closed” as of February 14th.
It had shut with no prior warning to its customers. The closure of post offices will mean nothing to the vast majority of Ireland’s population now located in urban areas. It will add to the feeling of isolation of Ireland’s rural communities who are being increasingly marginalised in Irish society. It seems that 21st-century Ireland has become a slave to profit, “deliverables” and performance-driven targets.
Until we step back and look at what direction our country is taking, we are in danger of becoming a two-tier society, based solely on access to basic amenities.– Yours, etc,
JENNIFER
