Sir, – Not too many parents will shudder when their son or daughter asks "Can I play rugby?", in spite of Brian O'Connor's assertions to the contrary in "Tipping Point" (Sports Opinion, October 8th). All his arguments about rugby being dangerous are countered by his own admission that "riding a horse makes you a million times more likely to be seriously injured than on a rugby field" and that he "wouldn't hesitate to give a leg up". I retired from the game when I was 55, which is 23 years ago. No regrets and no lasting injuries – just great memories. – Yours, etc,
ROBERT A SHARPE,
Cootehill,
Co Cavan.
