A giant leap for humanity

Sir, – A year ago the world was confronted by the worst pandemic in living memory.

We watched news reports of hospitals in Italy being overwhelmed by infected patients. The medical community had no treatments to deal with the worst effects of this devastating virus. It was a truly frightening time. Now, 12 months later, several pharmaceutical companies have tested and produced billions of doses of vaccines, which are successfully inoculating people against this terrible disease.

Is this not one of humanity’s greatest scientific achievements? – Yours, etc,
