Friends of Sinn Féin and newspaper ads

Sir, – I'd be slow to be unduly critical of the Friends of Sinn Féin's advertisements in US newspapers calling for Irish unity (News, March 10th). If they could resist their impulse to do a bit of grandstanding, and practically applied themselves to achieving a degree of unity in the six counties, I'd be quick to laud them. – Yours, etc,

GERRY CHRISTIE,

Sir, – Sinn Féin is canvassing support and raising funds in the US for the promotion of the concept of a united Ireland. This has been breathlessly reported in some quarters.

Nurse, pass me the smelling salts. Will I ever recover from the shock?

Last time I checked, a united Ireland is the raison d’être of Sinn Féin. Leo Varadkar says that he wants a united Ireland too but the devil’s in the detail. I presume that Sinn Féin knows that better than anyone.

Where’s the problem? This is outrage in search of a scandal. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL DEASY,
