A fitting monument?

Sir, – It is fast approaching 20 years since the Millennium Spike, or the “Spike”, was stuck in the middle of O’Connell Street.

Given recent occurrences in the field of planning and development in the city, surely it is now opportune to remove the Spike and reinstate the pillar that had so elegantly dominated the street for so long until its demise in March 1966, all of 55 years ago.

Only this time it would be 45 storeys high with a statue of Johnny Rohan atop. – Yours, etc,
