Sir, – More than 10,000 excess deaths (likely a significant underestimate) have been recorded in the aftermath of the most recent climate catastrophe to hit Europe: the late-June heatwave.
Against that backdrop, it is frankly unfathomable to learn that “Irish officials proposed scrapping the ‘linchpin’ of climate legislation” (August 3rd). Worse still, Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers has recently argued that Ireland’s climate laws are being “weaponised” by NGOs and other environmental groups as they seek to halt governmental projects that would result in even greater emissions and consequently harm to both planetary and human health.
If anyone is weaponising anything, it is our own officials and politicians, who continue to fuel the most destructive force of all: runaway climate change. – Yours, etc,
