Gardaí and the justice system need to change how they deal with bereaved families, Mr Michael Finucane, son of murdered Belfast solicitor, Mr Pat Finucane, said last night.

He was speaking at the launch of Life sentence: murder victims and their families, by Sunday Tribune journalist Catherine Cleary.

The book gives an account of 12 murder victims and their families, including Ms Phyllis Murphy, whose killer was brought to justice two years ago, 23 years after her death, and James Morgan, the Co Down teenager murdered by loyalist paramilitaries in 1997.

More emphasis needed to be put on the needs of the families of the bereaved, who were often neglected by the justice system, Mr Finucane said.
