Heavy rain overnight has caused a race meeting in Galway to be cancelled after a morning inspection.

The wet end to October, with Storm Austen and Storm Boelo coming in quick succession, also caused a fixture in Wexford to be abandoned on Monday.

Tuesday was forecast to be generally cool and blustery with widespread showers in the aftermath of the storms, and a wind warning in place for counties Antrim and Derry.

The UK Met Office has issued a status-yellow wind warning for Antrim and Derry, which will remain in place until 9pm.

The next named storm on the annual list is Storm Chloe, but the UK Met Office had stopped short of assigning the name to the weather system due to be felt most intensely in Scotland.

Many of the showers on Tuesday will be heavy and there will be “isolated thunderstorms and possibly hail”, Met Éireann said.

Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees are forecast.

Wednesday morning is due to be cloudy, with rain in the north and “well scattered showers” in other areas.

From late morning onwards it will be largely dry with just isolated showers and some sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees are forecast, “with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds in the morning, decreasing light to moderate and becoming southerly later”.

Thursday is forecast to be cloudy with light patches of rain or drizzle, and w dry and bright conditions are expected on Friday along with more cloudy patches.

The Ballybrit racing venue had been in action on both Sunday and Monday, but with heavy rain overnight, the track was deemed in no fit state to stage the final meeting of its 2026 fixture list.

A statement from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board said: “Following 12mm of rain overnight and still currently raining, Galway is now unfit for racing and the fixture scheduled for today has been cancelled.”-Additional reporting by PA
