Clanwilliam Group, a Dublin-headquartered healthcare, technology and services group, which has spent more than €10 million on tech firms serving the NHS in just over a year, has acquired Cheshire-based Medisec Software for an undisclosed sum.

Medisec is the 13th healthcare technology company to be snapped up by the group during the last three years as it looks to support its ambitious digitisation ambitions across the UK health service.

Clanwilliam is headed by Howard Beggs, the founder of Helix Health, which was acquired by Eli Global for a reported €45 million in late 2014.

The company said it plans to spend €100 million on acquisitions and investments in healthcare tech and is primarily focused on firms generating in excess of €1 million and with a maximum transaction value of €40 million.

The group has invested £9.5 million (€10.5 million) in tech companies serving the NHS within the last 14 months. The acquisitions includes Bluespier, which provides trusts with theatre management systems and clinical software, and Maxwell Stanley Consulting, a specialist consultancy firm that helps NHS organisations enhance patient information and financial outcomes through tailored services across clinical coding departments.

Other businesses within Clanwilliam Group include Clanwilliam Health (formerly Helix Health), Toniq, Medical Business Systems, Medical Management Services, Claimsure and Epic Solutions.

Medisec Software has been working with NHS organisations for 25 years to digitise clinical correspondence and dictation. Some 15,000 primary and secondary healthcare professionals in England currently rely on the company’s products to generate more than five million documents every year.

The firm’s clients include the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

“Medisec Software is an instant fit, providing cleverly integrated technologies with a long-term commitment to helping NHS organisations through their digital transformation,” said Mr Beggs.

Clanwilliam says its companies are helping to reduce the deficit in NHS trusts by about £14 million annually.

“Clanwilliam Group’s growth strategy across the UK is to actively develop a group of highly synergistic healthcare technology and services businesses. We back leadership, and select companies who are already driving innovation in the healthcare industry and which, with the right support, have the potential to transform the healthcare landscape even further,” said Mr Beggs.
