At least 27 people are injured, some seriously and critically, after a man drove his car into crowds in the Bavarian city of Munich in Germany, authorities said.

“It was probably an attack,” Bavaria premier Markus Söder told reporters.

The driver drove around a police car protecting a trade union demonstration and accelerated into the crowd, local authorities believe.

A man (24), an Afghan asylum seeker, has been detained at the scene and identified as the suspect, police said.

Police officers intervening at the scene fired a shot at the vehicle.

There is no known link to the Munich Security Conference starting in the city on Friday.

Earlier witnesses had told German newspaper Bild that two men were in the vehicle – a Mini Cooper – when it crashed into the group.

A large-scale police operation got under way near the southern city’s central train station following the incident.

A demonstration by the service workers’ union ver.di was taking place at the time.

The Munich Security Conference is to start on Friday and US vice-president JD Vance and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy are arriving later on Thursday. – Agencies
