Roscrea take control against spirited Wesley

Skipper Tim Foley scores 21 points for Tipperary school

Irish under-18 international and captain Tim Foley led Roscrea past a spirited Wesley College at Naas RFC yesterday, scoring 21 points of his team’s total, including a brilliant solo try that pushed the Offaly side towards victory.

Foley grabbed the only score of the first half after two minutes, slotting over a long range penalty.

An error-strewn first half followed, with the majority of the game played between the 22-yard lines.

Roscrea failed to live up to their favourites tag as a well-drilled Wesley side, led by halfbacks Jack Maybury and Andrew Scanlon kept Roscrea pinned in their own half.

Both sides were guilty of butchering opportunities, with poor handling leading to a high first-half error count.

A missed Scanlon penalty early in the second half was as close as Wesley would come to scoring, as Roscrea began to take control.

Foley followed up his try on 45 minutes with three consecutive penalties, as Wesley began to lose their discipline.

The beaten league finalists finished on a high, as lock Fineen Wycherley crashed over for Roscrea’s second try in the final play.

Roscrea head coach Pieter Swanepoel was happy with the win but says his side "still have a lot of work to do" if they want to compete against the big guns.
