St Andrew's College remain on course for a unique double following their girls' dramatic victory last Friday afternoon in the Leinster Senior Cup final against Rathdown on penalties at Grange Road.
It means they will represent the province in the All-Ireland Kate Russell Championships in a fortnight’s time with a chance to match the Booterstown school’s boys who won their equivalent last October.
They are one of only three schools to have won both titles – Dublin rivals Wesley College and Kilkenny College are the others – but it has never been done within the same season.
Last Friday, they produced a stunning comeback from 2-0 against a Rathdown seeking their first senior title.
Late onslaught
Karla Ray and Amber Barnwell had given the Glenageary side a big advantage with 25 minutes to go but a quick reply from Serena Brooks gave Andrew's a lifeline.
And Sally Campbell’s corner goal with three minutes left, following a late onslaught, forced extra-time and the Saints duly prevailed 3-2 in the penalty shoot-out.
It made Andrew’s one of four sides confirmed in the Kate Russell championships to date with southeast’s Kilkenny College, 2-0 winners over Loreto Kilkenny, and Ulster champions Lurgan High School confirmed in the marquee event.
Salerno are the Connacht side in the mix while Munster’s representative will be confirmed on Friday when Crescent and Mount Mercy face-off to complete the bill.
Unique achievement
For Andrew's, they are on the verge of another unique achievement across the genders as the girls cup win confirmed their double having already won the Premier League.
The boys also have a league title in the bag and are in the semi-finals of the cup, a competition in which they are runaway favourites having defeated main rivals Wesley three times already this season.
