Ballyshannon swimmer finishes fourth in 200m breaststroke at World Junior Championships

Ireland's Mona McSharry narrowly missed out on another medal at the World Junior Swimming Championships in the US on Monday night.

The 17-year-old finished fourth in the final of the 200m breaststroke having already won two medal at the tournament in Indianapolis.

She finished with a time of 2.27.67, two-tenths of a second behind the UK’s Annabel Guye-Johnson.

On Saturday night, she became the first Irish swimmer to win gold at the championships. She was victorious in the 100m breaststroke, breaking the national senior record as she touched the wall in 1:07.1.

McSharry, a member of the Marlins Swimming Club in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, took the bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke on Thursday. In just eight weeks, McSharry has won world and European 100m breaststroke gold, world bronze and European gold in the 50m breaststroke and European 200m breaststroke silver.

Conor Ferguson was also in action on the last day of racing at the championships, finishing seventh in the final of the men's 200m backstroke.

The Irish record holder for the event finished in 1.59.86, three seconds behind the winner, Spaniard Hugo Gonzalez.
