Uefa Cup second qualifying round, second leg/Derry City (5) v Gretna (1), Brandywell, 7.30: With a trip to Dublin for Sunday's FAI Cup game at Shelbourne looming large, Derry City could rest several players for tonight's Uefa Cup second qualifying round, second leg, at the Brandywell.

Kevin Deery and Ciarán Martyn, both of whom scored twice in the second half as City secured a 5-1 win over Gretna at Fir Park, could start this evening's game on the bench where they might be joined by experienced striker Gary Beckett.

Derry manager Stephen Kenny insists he wants to see his side win the second leg but he concedes he is in the rather unfamiliar situation of being able to think one game ahead because of their big away win in the first leg.

Of the three established first-team regulars Deery, who flew back from the under-21 international in Greece to play against Cork City last weekend, is the most likely to be rested with Ruaidhri Higgins set to start in his place.

With a succession of important league games, the FAI Cup tie, a League Cup semi-final and, Kenny will be hoping, at least two more Uefa Cup games to come over the weeks ahead, the Derry manager may consider somewhat more extensive changes with Mark Farren a possible starter up front and Pat McCourt in line to play on the right side of midfield.

Meanwhile, in the continued absence of Peter Hutton (foot) and Killian Brennan (knee), Ken Oman will partner Darren Kelly in central defence while Stephen O'Flynn will feature on the left wing.

Gretna's players, understandably, can't quite bring themselves to absolutely concede defeat but as they prepared for the game over the last couple of days most identified the achievement of a respectable result in the away leg as the main objective after the humiliation the side suffered at home two weeks ago.

"It was a bad night," says midfield veteran Steve Tosh of the first encounter, "and we have to rectify that by salvaging some pride. After that . . . who knows what might happen."

The Gretna manager, Rowan Alexander, is without newly-signed striker Colin McMenamin who scored both goals as the Scots made three league wins out of three on Saturday against Ross County. The former Shrewsbury Town player was not registered in time to play.

The draw for the first round proper will be made tomorrow morning. Eighty teams will be involved with the winners of this evening's 32 qualifying games joined by 32 clubs who secured their place in the draw last season, and the line-up will be completed by the losing sides from the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

The draw will be seeded with Tottenham, Parma, holders Sevilla and Rangers all among the potential opponents for Irish teams. The winners of those games will go forward to the group stages when clubs will play two home and two away games against sides drawn in the same pool of five.
