European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley shot a five-under-par 67 in the opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am to lie three shots off the lead of American rookie Andrew Loupe.
Playing the Pebble Beach course, McGinley carded five birdies and no bogeys on an opening day where the players faced suspensions in play due to heavy rain on the north Californian coast.
Loupe carded an eight-under 63 at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club before the heavens opened.
The 23-year-old America – who has not made the cut on his five Tour appearances prior to this – was faultless in not dropping a shot and holds an advantage over a chasing pack of five, made up of Stuart Appleby, Jimmy Walker, Jim Renner, Scott Gardiner and Richard H Lee.
A total of 40 players were left with incomplete first rounds after a three-hour rain delay which eventually turned into bad light, with three-time winner Phil Mickelson among them. He is well placed on five under after 15 holes.
Graeme McDowell carded a one-under 71 at Spyglass Hill, while Pádraig Harrington’s level-par 72 at Pebble Beach left him well down the leaderboard.
