Sir, – In discussing where Ireland fits into Europe, Paul Gillespie writes that: "Northwestern Europe brings together . . . Finland and Austria" ("Where does Ireland fit in Europe now?", Worldview, March 17th). The Finns can speak for themselves but Austria remains firmly in Mitteleuropa.
The eastern limits of Europe are hard to define but, after redrawing the map of Europe at the 1815 Congress of Vienna, Prince von Metternich, the Austrian foreign minister, had no hesitation in declaring “Asia begins at the Landstrasse” (the main road east out of Vienna). – Yours, etc,
Dr JOHN DOHERTY,
Vienna.
