Violet behaviour

Sir, – Violet Gibson – the Dublin-born daughter of Baron Ashbourne – and who shot Mussolini in the nose, was not the only member of her distinguished family to give the Italian police cause for concern (An Irishman's Diary, January 5th).

Her brother, “Mad Willie”, an enthusiastic member of the Gaelic League who spoke Irish in the House of Lords, travelled to Rome to retrieve his sister.

The carabinieri found him wandering around the Colosseum in a saffron-coloured kilt with a tortoise in his sporran.

Violet returned to Britain accompanied by her sister and a nurse. – Yours, etc,
