Vaccine hesitancy and science education

Sir, – The concerning levels of vaccine hesitancy across Europe – including in Ireland – reveals a serious shortcoming in science education, starting at primary-school level. While we have all known of this deficit, now we see the consequence. It is surely incumbent on national and EU politicians alike to address this deficit as a matter of urgency. The planet can no longer afford conspiracy theories, vaccine hesitancy and climate change denial.

We need a serious new agenda across the EU to educate our young regarding what science is, and how it should inform judgment and decisions both personal and societal.

– Yours, etc,

KEVIN NOLAN,
