Up and running

Sir, – Further to Éanna Brophy's Irishman's Diary (February 9th), what's the difference between jogging and running?

I have always hated the former description of what I would classify as more than a walk and less than a sprint. I stopped smoking at age 30 just as the running (not jogging) boom was getting into full swing. I took up running to stave off the awful nicotine craving and to improve my general health. In a short time I was hooked and went on to participate in many races, including four Dublin marathons and two Cork marathons. I continued running into my early forties but then got hooked on the more leisurely sport of golf.

So please let’s call the activity what it is – running. And more power to all the runners out there, both experienced and those who are new to the activity. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL O’KEEFFE,
