Unexpected person in the packing area

Sir, – With the ever increasing risk of job losses through automation, would it be an idea for us to try to use people rather than machines where possible?

Whether in Tesco or Bank of Ireland, where possible try to attend a human cashier or check-out person.

Do we want our children and grandchildren to be employed? To maintain the bones of a welfare state we need workers who can pay taxes. For meaning and self-esteem, work is important. Job losses affect us all. Could a movement start where we consciously decide to use people where possible? – Yours, etc,

KAREN Ní LORCAIN,
