Sir, – I wish to support the points made by Comdt (retd) CJ Barber is his letter (Letters, September 1st).
As the cost and maintenance of a strategic lift aircraft is very high, its use should be maximised.
Such an aircraft could be used to support Irish and other humanitarian operations in disaster relief situations.
It could also be used to resupply troops on overseas missions with military equipment which cannot readily be moved by commercial means.

In an emergency it could complement the Air Corp’s present capacity to carry out maritime surveillance.
