Sir, – Top of my wish-list this Christmas would be to put an end, once and for all, to the mindless ritual of young people, mostly well educated, setting off to have a drink in 12 different public houses in one evening. There is nothing to admire in this exercise and whoever initiated it should rue the day. Contrast it to others of a similar age who devote their time and energy trying to alleviate the poverty and misery of those less fortunate. They deserve admiration.
Could we appeal to these youngsters to have sense? Nobody wants to stop them from enjoying themselves but what enjoyment is there in the end result? I can only wish but without much hope of my wish being granted. – Yours, etc,
