The rising cost of motor insurance

Sir, – With all the inquires into inquiries going on in Ireland on a boringly regular basis, how come no one has asked why insurance companies seem to be able to think up a figure and double it when it comes to charging for car insurance?

As if their charges are not bad enough, insurance companies are also getting away with deciding when vehicles should be scrapped.

Anybody with a car even as young as 10 years old is in trouble, and for those trying to get starter cars, anyone with anything older than the aforementioned 10 years cannot even get a quote, in many cases.

Proper service histories, valid NCT certificates and condition seem to make absolutely no difference. Not everyone can afford new cars or even cars younger than 10 years old.

Surely those people should be given a fair chance to get motoring?

While it is totally unacceptable for people to drive without insurance, it is easy to see why some do. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – It is surely time to introduce price controls for car insurance.

Insurance companies quoting increases in premiums of in excess of 25 per cent year-on-year, with no reason, explanation or justification provided in individual cases is unacceptable. – Yours, etc,
