The Eighth Amendment

Sir, – I read with interest the letters from Colin Walsh and Neil Bray (March 5th), both of whom sought to challenge Prof Fiona de Londras's assertion (March 3rd) that repeal of the Eighth Amendment would enable our law to support pregnant women in making ethical decisions about maintaining foetal life. However, neither man could adequately address the key central point: that while the Eighth Amendment remains in place, pregnant women are denied the legal capacity to make certain fundamental ethical decisions. Any person troubled by this denial of women's legal capacity and moral agency, even if they personally oppose abortion in some or all circumstances, might consider voting for repeal on this basis. – Yours, etc,

IVANA BACIK,
