Sir, – Ever since arriving in 1985 as an immigrant to Ireland and as a person from a secular background, I have always enjoyed the Angelus each day. It always invokes for me memories of a child growing up in a small rural English market town, where the central parish church would peal out the bells on a regular basis. Even then I would always stop and listen in delight and joy.
Some years ago I happened to be staying back in that town, and waited eagerly to see if the bells still rang out. Sure enough they did, to be followed shortly after by the Muslim call to prayer from the local mosque. Magical both! – Yours, etc,
GILL McCARTHY,
Shillelagh,
