Sir, – In becoming world champion for the second time following his win at London's Alexandra Palace on Monday, darts player Peter "Snakebite" Wright made an impression on many beyond the darts community and fanbase ("Wright breaks Smith's resistance and heart to win world title", Sport, January 4th).
His flamboyant costumes and colourful Mohican hairstyle showed that “characters” can still thrive in sport. As can the middle-aged – Wright is 51, and there can’t be too many sports where you can reach the summit into your fifties.
What impressed my children most about him in action, though, was how quick he can do maths in his head. Perhaps there is an opening for showing “Snakebite” in full flow in science and technology promotions; he would certainly inspire the young to think of maths differently. – Yours, etc,
BRIAN QUIGLEY,
