Sir, – Now that President Michael D Higgins has declared his intention to run for a second term in office, I wonder is he willing at this stage to reveal what major election promise he intends to break this time round. – Yours, etc,
BRIAN CULLEN,
Rathfarnham,
Dublin 16.
Sir, – The President of Ireland has every right to change his mind. Just as the people of Ireland have every right to vote for who they believe in. – Yours, etc,
PATRICK KELLY,
Castleknock,
Dublin 15.
Sir, – President Michael D Higgins has announced that his country needs him.
Our President is a decent and erudite man. But he gave us his word and he is breaking it now. He should take a moment to reflect on that. – Yours, etc,
MICHAEL DEASY,
Carrigart,
Co Donegal.
Sir, – Article 13(4) of the Constitution states that “The supreme command of the Defence Forces is hereby vested in the President”. Is there not some irony in the mandatory retirement age of 60 years for members of the Defence Forces when their supreme commander can continue to work until 82 years of age? – Yours, etc,
CAROLINE FANNING,
Dublin 18.
